Genesis launches practical ebikes with a mixte flavour

Genesis has launched two brand new twin urban ebikes, Smithfield and Columbia Road, built to make city cycling as easy as possible.

Named after the London markets – specialising in meat and flowers respectively – there’s a big emphasis on functionality with front and rear racks, mudguards, 2-inch tyres, hydraulic disc brakes, a kickstand, a single chainring and of course the electric assist.

They also come with a Trelock ring lock system attached to the racks that allows you to secure the wheels with a key, so all you’ll need is a capable lock to hold the frame with.

The bikes are almost identical, with all the same features and built with Genesis’s double-butted Mjolnir chromoly steel tubing, with a mixte-style split top tube. The Columbia Road has a step-through frame and is a very smart light blue, while the Smithfield has a straight sloping top tube and is a military green.

They’re both equipped with the Shimano Steps E6100 motor, which provides up to 150km of assistance in Eco – with two further modes above that – and is said to charge to 80 percent in two hours and to full in four.

They’re also priced the same, and not cheaply – as you’d expect from an e-bike – coming in at £2,999.99 a pop.

Brodie Gardias, senior brand manager at Genesis distributor Sportline, says, ‘It’s clear that ebikes have come a long way in recent years and can truly bring cycle transport to the masses. At Genesis we’re always looking to be at the forefront of technological trends but always through the lens of Genesis form and function.

‘The Smithfield and Columbia Road models begin our journey into ebikes through the Shimano Steps drive system and, combined with their elegant styling and beautiful tube set, they certainly tick all the boxes.’
