If you are looking to purchase any hemi way electric bike, we would really appreciate it if you use the link in the description before you make your purchase its a free and easy way to help support the channel. So thanks in advance for your support, well also throw some other resources down in the description that you might want to check out our electric bike, accessories list, top ebike brands page and finally, our electric bike discounts code page where we track all the deals on the Electric bike brands that we follow with that lets, get in to the walk around of the hemi way big dog. So this is another one of their models that was first announced late 2021. At the same time of the hemingway zebra, we recently did a review on that a lot of people interested in that electric bike, and we also recently did a range test on that bike, so be sure to check out the link in the top right hand, corner Of your screen, if you are interested in learning more about that bike, now, the big dog compared to the zebra is going to be more accommodating to shorter riders and they actually advertise it as a cargo electric bike which its certainly capable of hauling a lots of Cargo with its 400 pound capacity and that large and wide rear rack. But i view this bike as more as an alternative to the zebra for those who want a fat tire bike, but are maybe a little bit on the shorter end.

But regardless you can use it for whatever you want, as youll see here in a little bit as we get into some of the specs lets actually start up here in the front with these fat tires. These are 20 by 4 inch tires. These are the kenda crusade tires, and they have some knobs on here so certainly capable of really taking it anywhere. A lot of people like these fat tire bikes because they are so versatile and capable, and you can use them for whatever you want now for wheels. Youll notice, we do not have spokes. These are mag wheels, so, while theyre a little bit heavier than spoked rims or wheels, you never have to adjust them, which of course, is really nice and some people really like the look of them. For me on an e bike, if youre really going to be loading it up with lots of cargo, i personally like not having to adjust the spokes. I have had to adjust the spokes on some of our cargo electric bikes when we do load them up to their full capacity for braking power. On this bike we have 180 millimeter, tecto, rotors and theyre paired with tektro aries mechanical disc brakes. I have a lot of experience with these brakes, so one notable difference if youre looking at the zebra or this electric bike, the zebra does come with hydraulic disc brakes. I should also note the price of this bike.

The big dog is priced at 19.99, though they do offer sales from time to time again check out our discounts, code, page and speaking of price lets get to the sponsor of this video, oyster dont. Let a thief or an accident rain on your parade. E bikes are expensive, so why not protect your electric bike with insurance from oyster, unlike homeowners or renters insurance oyster, covers the full value of your electric bike, whether it is stolen from your home or out on an adventure plus, you can get coverage for liability and Medical payments: the process is simple, with only five steps, you might be surprised at just how affordable it is. As an example, our beloved 2021 rad wagon 4, with an msrp of 2 000. plus our e bike accessories, would cost just 13.25 a month or 159 a year for us to insure here in wisconsin so head on over to the link in the description. So you can get peace of mind and focus on whats important having fun on your electric bike. Oh im, feeling much better now that im covered thanks to oyster for sponsoring this video moving on. We have a nutted front axle, so not a quick release so its going to take you a little bit of time. If you need to ever remove the front wheel, also note on these tires, they do have a reflective sidewall and we have plastic fenders, both front and rear. We see fenders on many fat tire, electric bikes, that look very similar to these lots of clearance, always like that.

The hemi way big dog does come with front suspension. There is a pre load adjustment on the left and a lockout on the right ill go ahead and push down on the front suspension. So you can get an idea of what to expect, certainly going to help soak up some bumps, along with those fat tires that you can run on lower pressure up front. We do have this dual led front light that runs right off the battery same light. That comes on the zebra, with most of these front lights, theyre not going to provide a lot of be seen. Visibility during the day, though its not a bad idea to leave them on. I always recommend the rechargeable external lights and, if youre riding at night, i would highly consider some of those external lights that have a very wide beam, just to be able to see a lot better and, of course it helps. Other motorists see you as well. Moving on to the head tube here we have the hemi way logo, as well as the four bolts. If you wanted to add an accessory up here, lets talk about cable management. You can see that they did a little bit with this wrap here. I think they could have done a little bit more, but they did try to keep them together here. The cables go to the light here, as well as the mechanical disc brake, and they do enter the frame internally routed on the right side of the frame here.

Since were up here lets talk about the bmx style, handlebars, something that were seeing more and more often on electric bikes, because a lot of people prefer the riding position. And i personally like the choice of these handlebars on the bike. But just note that, as someone who is a taller rider, you can check out the third person riding footage towards the end of the video im a little bit more leaning forward on this bike. You can imagine, as someone whos six feet, tall youre just up a little bit higher, so youre kind of over the handlebars versus someone who would perhaps lower the seat and just be a little bit more upright with the handlebars more straight across from their shoulders. Moving on to the cockpit here we have the faux leather grips that come on so many electric bikes. If you want something locking a little bit more high quality, you can check out the video we did on the ergon grips highly recommend those moving on to the brake levers. These are actually unbranded but theyre, very similar to the tecto levers that ive seen that are sometimes paired with these aries brakes because they do have the rubber grip. And there is the integrated bell right into the lever which i really like cell phone holder, not included on this electric bike, but i do use it in my first person riding footage. So you can check that out on our electric bike.

Accessories list link in the description lets jump over to the right side before we get into the controls. So we have a shimano thumb, shifter here very similar to the cis index shifter, that we see on many electric bikes to go down gears. You use your thumb this way and to go up gears. You press this blue button here very basic component, but in my opinion it does get the job done on the right side. The him away, big dog, does have a right hand twist grip throttle. I personally prefer the twist grip throttles now. One of the reasons that you see, sometimes companies dont upgrade the shifter up here is because this thumb shifter is very compatible with the twist grip throttle lets jump to the controls. This is the same controls and display that can be found on the zebra. What i do like is, it has a dedicated light button ill turn it on here with the power button here now it is a very simple display, but i have to say it is also very easy to read during the daylight, so thats, something that i appreciate. More than some of the fancier looking displays, if you cant see them in the daylight, so we have a battery capacity in the top left hand corner just five bars. I prefer to see the percentage we have pedal assist in the top right hand. Corner have the up and down buttons here for pedal, assist zero one, two three four or five: we have current speed front and center odometer, hitting the i button will give you additional information here, trip ride time and back to odometer something else.

I really like about the display and the controls on the big dog is you can actually go into the advanced settings and change both the amount of pedal assist levels, but also how much power you get at every pedal assist level. So thats really great for someone. Whos, maybe new to electric bikes and you dont want as much power in pedal system one. I talk a little bit more about this in my first person riding footage. I actually left it stocked, but just know that you can go in and change those settings and, of course you can go ahead and adjust the top speed as well. Again, i talk about that in the upcoming first person, riding footage below the display im sure some people completely miss this. I sometimes do there is a usb port if you need to charge up a device always like when companies include that lets talk a little bit more about the frame, as well as the hemingway branding right here on what ill call the down tube here and also In the rear of the bike, now, of course, this is a step through bike, which is awesome for those who want a little bit more of an accessible bike, very easy to hop on, and you can see its a very burly built frame. You can see theres a reinforcement here. We also have some bottle cage bosses and also note this gray. Color is the only color that the big dog is currently offered in.

It is a nice glossy finish lets jump to the battery. There is a charge port here or or a cover, so you can access to charge the battery when its in the bike. If youd like now, in my opinion, the reason people consider some of the hemi way bikes is due to their large battery capacity, especially with the zebra, as well as the big dog here ill put the key in here and go ahead and remove the battery. There is a lever underneath the frame here to release the battery now, because these are 20 by 4 inch tires its a little bit easier to remove this extra large battery than it is on some full size, 26 by four bikes, 48 volt 20 amp hour battery. You just simply dont see that capacity on many electric bikes, so if youre looking for extra range, this might be a good option, does have a button here. To give you an idea of the current capacity of the battery and to put the battery back simply insert the bottom in first and push the battery in now with these batteries that are located on the bottom of the down tube, i always like to make sure That theyre really locked in place. Of course, you dont want the battery to accidentally fall out when youre riding. Now, if youre familiar with electric bikes, you may mistake this for a mid drive motor, but in fact this is a rear hub motor.

But what hemingway has done both on the zebra as well as the big dog? Is they put in the controller down here, which is really nice? Because if you ever needed to its pretty accessible and just due to its design, it kind of looks like a mid drive motor for pedals. We have the metal pedals that come on many electric bikes. These are well go, of course. If you want something a little bit wider, maybe some more grip, you can purchase aftermarket pedals as we see on many electric bikes. The cables actually come out of the frame at the very bottom here and then run to the brakes, as well as the motor and light, and well talk about the kickstand here in just a second in the rear. Here we have the tektro ares calipers and again this really nice rear rack that comes on the big dog and they also include this nice wooden platform with their branding. Now one thing with this rear rack that i really noticed when i first unboxed. It is just how wide this platform really is. Definitely a wider rack than you see that comes standard on many electric bikes and i think thats kind of why theyre going with the marketing this as more of a cargo e bike, but it is certainly a burly rear. Rack here lets talk about the rear light, so this is something i havent seen before. You can see that they have it branded, which is really cool and theres.

Also a reflector below it now note that this is a brake light. So when you hold the brakes, even if the lights are arent on its going to flash, but even when the lights are on and you hit the brakes its going to flash and of course this light does run off the main battery as well. I would say this is brighter than the average rear light found on many electric bikes and, of course, it kind of has a cool factor with the branding, so nice job hemi way now encased in the rear wheel. Here, with these mag wheels, we have the motor advertised as a 750 watt motor, though, with the 22 amp controller, its probably peaking, just over a thousand watts stay tuned for our first person riding footage, so you can check out just how powerful this motor really is. In the rear, here we have a 14 to 28 tooth rear freewheel shimano that we see on many electric bikes paired with a shimano altus rear derailleur again a component we see on so many electric bikes gets the job done for most people. It is pretty easy to adjust to with the barrel adjuster, and hemingway also includes this derailleur guard to help keep it protected. The motor cable comes in on the right side of the bike same with that rear light, and you can see that they are underneath the frame here. The front chain ring is metal single sided, 46 tooth.

I wanted to spend some time talking about this kickstand so to go with the cargo theme, they decided to go with one of these dual kickstands made out of metal. Now, one of the nice things is the bike. Is nice and stable on the kickstand and, of course, theres no problems with the pedals coming in contact with it? So while i really like this kickstand for stability, i just wanted to share one thing that i noticed with it so rock the bike forward here now, as you can see where the kickstand falls when its folded, you can see theres, not a lot of clearance here. So thats, something more to just be aware of. I personally didnt have any issues with it, but one thing when i was doing my first person riding footage. I did notice any slight bumps actually causes the chain to hit the kickstand here, so maybe theres something that can be done on a future generation of this bike, or maybe i could put some of my 3m tape here and kind of dampen the sound, but it Sounds a little bit like a bell when im going over bumps, because the chain does hit that and of course, if youre going off road youre going to hear it even more and speaking of chain slap. One thing i would like to see hemiway do here as well is include some protection here by the chainstay. I am definitely going to put some 3m tape here, because i want to keep this paint looking really nice again, if youre going over bumps.

That chain has a tendency to hit the chain stay here. If you check out our electric bike accessories list, i have the 3m tape that i like to use its just clear tape and helps protect the frames. You can also use that tape where you might have a cable rub around your electric bike, say, for instance, on this bike. If youre turning and you notice that this paint starts getting worn away, you can put some of that 3m tape there as well. Okay lets move on to the saddle here pretty average saddle, in my opinion. As far as comfort goes again, we have the ones that we see most people buy on our electric bike accessories list. The big dog does have a short stem here, so perhaps, as someone whos a little bit taller, you could put in adjustable stem here and raise these handlebars up a little bit more or you can also use a stem riser. That concludes the walk around of the hemiway big dog lets, get into some first person riding footage and see what this bike can do. All right. First person riding footage on the hemi way: big dog electric bike ill first, do our throttle only test. I have the speedometer app by cool nyx before we get into the test. I just want to note. I did go ahead and override the settings. It allowed me to change the max speed up to 40 kilometers. An hour comes set at 36 kilometers an hour, and i was hitting the top speed before i made those changes around 21 – maybe 22, so just to note thats how the bike comes shipped so make any changes at your own risk be sure to follow all your Local laws and regulations all right here we go with the test, throttle only three two one throttle only pretty smooth takeoff: 7.

11. 15. 17. 20. 21 23 display is reading 24., so it looks like 23 miles. An hour is going to be the top speed on throttle. Only and just to note, the pedal assist level does not coincide with how much power you get from the throttle. Now i do like to answer the question: can you huddle whatever electric bike im reviewing with no pedal assist, and typically the answer is yes, youre just going to be getting quite a bit of a workout here, i am in pedal, says zero im still in seventh Gear id probably shift down here, though uh fourth gear flat ground. You know fourth gear, i think, is pretty good going about eight nine miles an hour thats typical for most of the electric bikes i review its just hills are going to be a significant challenge, though, of course you can always shift down into first gear, which is Nice, if you do encounter a slight hill, but hopefully you never run out of battery or hopefully you dont have problems all right lets go ahead and go into the pedal assist levels now, just to note that you can customize these to your liking, as i discussed Earlier so these are just the stock settings and pedal sys level. One gives me 38 of the motor power so thats actually quite a bit. I would probably turn that down a little bit lets go ahead and go into pedal system. One and yeah i mean i can feel it – i wouldnt say its completely taking off on me as someone whos experienced, but it might be too much for some people, and i do need to shift up here, maybe to fourth gear here, going about 11 12 miles.

An hour leisurely, cadence, providing some effort, but not a ton. All right lets go ahead and go into pedals. This level two feel the motor again. You can probably hear it too fifth gear, already theres 15 miles an hour. I would maybe shift up to sixth gear here very powerful electric bike. In my opinion, all right lets go and pedal this level three hear the motor again kicking on, and i would shift up to seventh gear here and i think, were gon na hit that 20 miles an hour. So just shy looks like now. This is probably where i would ride this. Electric bike pedal assist level 3 miles per hour, then its a class two electric bike. Obviously, if its limited to that in the settings lets go ahead and go into pedal system level, four talk a little bit more about the pedaling and i wouldnt say here at 21 22 miles an hour im quite ghost pedaling, but it is a faster cadence than Id want to do for a long longer period of time, so id probably reserve the pedal assist levels, four and five for a hill, or maybe, if you just really want to take off fast, i guess so. 21 22 miles per hour on pedal assist level. Four turn here and actually ill do pedal assist five from stop here and i will still stay in seventh gear. So itll take a little bit for the cadence sensor.

There we go 14 17. and theres 23. 24 miles an hour right around there and again. I am still able to provide effort, but you know im just spinning my legs uh pretty fast, fast cadence for sure you could do it just kind of personal preference. Now. One thing that i wanted to call out on this electric bike is that every so often ive been noticing when the pedal cyst engages. If im just doing one or two pedal strokes and the pedal assist engages. It takes a little bit for the motor to cut off, but its not all the time. I think its less of an issue if youre at speed and like i said its, not happening all the time, but, for instance, if youre in a tight space or something its just something you want to be aware of. Of course, the brakes are going to turn off power to the motor immediately, so you always want to have those at the ready, but something that i just wanted to call out and its probably something that is maybe unique to me being able to call out, because I do ride so many electric bikes its just that extra split second and it again it doesnt happen all the time, so i dont think its a deal breaker, but i just wanted to to share that piece of information all right. So we know what this bike can do on flat ground, but lets see how it does up our large hill climb test.

Okay, here we are at the hill climb test the hill that we test out all the electric bikes that we review. So you can compare and contrast the power of the electric bikes we review. The gopro makes it look so much smaller than it actually is so well throw up a picture of the hill as well as the specs first test will be throttle only well get up to speed here and hopefully get some room here all right. Getting up to that 22 23 miles an hour, all right, well see what this boulder can do going down to 18. 17. 16.. I really view anything 14 and above is really powerful for an electric bike, especially providing no human power, and it looks like its going to hold us at 16 as a minimum speed. So again, very impressive motor power and i did have the battery completely charged up before this ride, as i usually do so even on this heavy electric bike, the motor has no problem. All right hill is starting to trail off here, but of course, i always recommend providing some own your some of your own effort getting some exercise. It is an electric bike. After all, all right, im, gon na head back down the hill and well do the same test while pedaling all right hill climb test, while pedaling. Now just a note coming down the hill, looks like i hit about 26 miles per hour. I was still able to lock up these techno areas disc brakes again.

I have a lot of familiarity with these brakes and they do perform well. Of course, hydraulics perform better, but i was still able to lock up the tires and come to a complete stop on the hill. Just obviously really had to you know, pull both levers and obviously being careful, but they did indeed stop this heavy electric bike. All right going to use a little bit of throttle to get started here, going to pedal assist level. One now again, comparing the pedal cyst levels to say other electric bikes um most of the time pedal assist level. One isnt giving you 38 of the power out of the box on most electric bikes, so im guessing. I could probably go up the hill and pedal assist level. One uh right now, im in fifth gear and well see what happens when it gets a little bit steeper here, but yeah going 11 miles an hour pedal sis level. One no problem looks like its using three or four bars on that uh power meter lets go ahead and go into pedal sis level. Two. I think i could almost shift up here in the sixth gear, going about 13 14 miles an hour pedal sis level. Three. 14 or 15. shift up to seventh gear pedal system. Four, i mean we already know what this bike can do up the hill, its holding us at 16 or 17 very easily pedestal level five and it looks like pedestals level.

Four and five are both maxing out. The power bars, which is a general indicator of how much power the motor is using so not surprising, very powerful, given our throttle only test, but always good to conserve some battery. Even if you do have a massive battery, like the one that comes on this electric bike, all right with that lets get into some third person riding footage and ill. Give you my concluding thoughts on the hemi way. Big dog, the big dog rounds out the himaway lineup nicely as far as fat. Tire e bikes go since him away focuses solely on the fat tire e bike category, and this strategy has worked out well, buoyed in part by the insatiable interest in fat. Tire e bikes, while big is in the name and yes, the big dog, has a 400 pound capacity. This is going to be a better option for those seeking a smaller fat tire e bike. If youve ever seen a 26 by 4 fattar ebike in person, you know what im talking about. So this certainly is a fat tire ebike for shorter riders, starting at around five feet tall. As someone six feet. Tall id personally prefer a full size, fat, tire e bike, or at least something to bring the handlebars up higher. My wife at five foot, five enjoyed the fit of the big dog fit wise. Its also worth calling out that, unlike the moped style e bike, the himaway escape the big dog has an adjustable seat post its in himalways dna to maximize battery capacity.

So its no surprise they loaded the big dog up with a larger than average 48 volt 20 amp hour battery, which himalaya estimates should be good for up to 80 miles. We got 60 miles in our range test with the big dogs, larger animal friend, the zebra. Still impressive and if youre wondering yes, these batteries are cross compatible, just like the zebra, the motor performed well now throughout the rest of the e bike are standard components we see on many e bikes, shimano thumb, shifter 7 speed, altis derailleur, twist grip, throttle and fat Tires capable of really any kind of terrain. I will say that i would have liked to see hydraulic disc brakes on the big dog, especially since the zebra at the same price point sports them im. Sure others will echo that thought in the comment section below. Besides that, i hope him away can adjust whatever is going on with the pedal assist not kicking off, quite as fast as most cadence sensors, its something my wife immediately noticed as well. So its not just me so, where does this e bike stand out? The mag wheels for one that require no truing is a nice bonus for a bike meant to haul and the front and rear integrated lights are better than average. While the display is simple, it is both easy to read and allows users to customize the power delivery. At different pedal assist levels, the big dog is advertised as a cargo e bike, and it certainly has more capability than the average e bike.

With this burly rear rack rated 450 pounds. I personally wouldnt put any passengers on the rear, though, and from some of the marketing images on himoways website, it looks like a front rack should be available as well. I certainly think that himaway has raised the bar with these new models, but im curious what you think. Let me know what your favorite himalaya model is in the comment section below and if you do, plan to purchase a himalay wed really appreciate it. If use the link in the description before you make your purchase thanks for helping us to continue to review electric bikes like this one and, of course, if youre already a hemi way customer, let us know your experience in the comments that certainly helps out other shoppers.
